The use of information and communication technologies in learning, teaching and administration in educational institutions and agencies in New Zealand is growing at a rapid rate. These developments require large investments (financial, physical and time), from both individual institutions and government agencies. For these institutions and agencies to gain the maximum benefits from their investment it appears crucial developments are built upon the foundations of international experience. Successful processes, procedures and practices need to be identified and applied, and where necessary modified, to meet the needs of New Zealand tertiary and secondary school educationalists.
There appears to be growing acceptance within the New Zealand educational community there is a need to
• Fully exploit the power of the Internet to share resources across educational networks, improving information flows and access to learning resources.
• Improve interaction between disparate ICT systems by providing a framework for ICT development based on open ICT standards. Creating a connected, collaborative environment.
• Provide of a “single point” of entry for learners significantly enhancing their learning experience.
This open source learning object repository (OSLOR) project aims to build upon these initiatives and develop and implement a unique New Zealand learning object repository (LOR) based on quality open source code provided by leading educational institutions globally. It is anticipated the selected LOR will be incorporated and interact with current projects seeking open source solutions. In doing so it will reduce the dependence on and risks associated with the purchase of commercial developed products and provide a test bed connected, collaborative environment.
